Tuesday is free day at the Park City Museum which is showing the traveling exhibition, “Once Upon A Playground.” But that’s not all the museum has got going on. Melissa Allison has more:
The Library of Congress’s traveling exhibition “Once Upon A Playground” is a depiction of what playgrounds use to be like around 1900 when communities first started building them.
Museum Executive Director Sandra Morrison said playgrounds have evolved.
“You know in the 50’s and the 60’s there were varied themes,” Morrison said. “There was you know, playgrounds that was sort of space travel oriented or western oriented. And then comparing those with, you know, today where it’s a lot more practical and safety is always a big concern. So, it’s a fun exhibit.”
The exhibit is on display until October 16th.
Coming up on Thursday is the “Runaway Train” lecture at the Education Center in Prospector. Volunteer David Nicholas presents the story surrounding the Union Pacific crash that happened just north of the former train depot near Park City’s Main Street and Heber Ave.
Morrison said Nicholas has firsthand accounts about the runaway train.
“This one is focused on an event that happened in April of 1968,” Morrison said. “So, actually not that long ago. There was a railroad, Union Pacific, crash. And he actually has eyewitness accounts that he’ll be talking about. Because, [there are] people still around that remember it happening.”
The lecture is at the Park City Museum’s new Education and Collections Center at 2079 Sidewinder Dr.
The museum has been working on the stabilization of several mine structures this summer. The Daily West mainframe near the Montage and Empire chairlift at Deer Valley Resort wasn’t part of this summer’s projects since ownership is still in question.
This week, however, the museum’s structural engineer is working on the conveyor that comes out of the Thaynes shaft at Park City Mountain. Morrison said they’re taking measurements to put up some shore poles to hold it up through the winter.
