UVU Wrestler Charged With Rape At Wasatch County Music Festival

The Wasatch County Attorney’s office has filed a rape charge against a member of the wrestling team at Utah Valley University, alleging that he assaulted a woman last summer at a music festival in the Heber Valley.

The rape charge, a first-degree felony, was filed last week against 22-year-old Dayton Lee Racer.

According to court documents, officers in late June were referred to the University of Utah Medical Center, where a 20-year-old victim reported that she had been assaulted the day before while she was attending the Bonanza Campout Music Festival, just below the Jordanelle reservoir.

The victim said she was at the event with friends and entered Racer’s tent. She told him several times she was not there for anything sexual, but just to have fun. She said they consumed alcohol and did some “Molly’s” slang for Ecstasy.

The victim said the next thing she remembered was waking up in the tent the next morning with the defendant assaulting her.

The officer’s report said that at first, Racer refused to speak with them on the phone. Several weeks later, he said he wanted to have his attorney present before speaking with the police. The report said officers did not hear back from him, and so referred the charge to the County Attorney’s office.

Racer, reportedly, has a championship record as an athlete in high school and college, and transferred to UV earlier this year.

Salt Lake news reports say he has been suspended form the UVU team at this time. His attorney said in a KUTV news report that they intend to prove he is innocent.
