Wildfire Spurs Up To 200 Evacuations In Utah Park

VERNAL, Utah (AP) - Authorities say a nearly 4-square-mile wildfire has led to evacuations in northeast Utah's Steinaker State Park.

Park Manager Mike Murray said Saturday evening that the blaze had been threatening park structures and areas, including the office, shop and long-term campground.

He estimates 30 ft flames had come up to the shop, but multiple fire agencies held off the blaze, and it was no longer putting those buildings at risk.

Murray confirms about 150 to 200 campers, boaters and picnickers were evacuated from the park after the fire started a few miles away.

Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Kelsey Birchell tells the Salt Lake Tribune that the blaze is north of Vernal and burning northeast from Taylor Mountain. Its cause isn't yet known.

The newspaper reports U.S. Highway 191 has been closed.
