Summit County shares CDC COVID booster news

KPCW

The Center for Disease Control has announced it is approving booster vaccine shots for COVID-19. The Summit County Health Department said that on Monday, it will immediately start scheduling appointments for the boosters at the normal clinics.

The county reported that on Thursday night, the director of the CDC and its recommending body, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, determined there is a need for a Moderna booster six months after the second shot.

That is recommended for people 65 and older, those over 18 with certain medical conditions and those in high-risk occupations such as health care workers, teachers and first responders.

The CDC determined that anyone who got the J and J vaccine should receive a booster after two months.

The announcement also said that people can obtain crossover vaccinations. For instance, if their original shots were Moderna, they can receive a Pfizer or J and J booster.

There's no news yet about vaccines for the 5 to 11 age group.

Until Summit County appointments are available, people can contact their local pharmacy; they can sign up at the Summit County site vacc.me/booster or the state website getmyshot.utah.gov/mobile.

The county’s vaccine hotline is 435-243-5320 and is available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
