Park City Board Of Ed Adopts 2019/2020 School Calendar

The Park City Board of Education adopted the 2019 2020 school calendar during Tuesday’s Board meeting. Carolyn Murray has this:

Park City School Board President Andrew Caplan said the goal is to publish the 2020-21 calendar by June.  Some stake holders, including the Park City Education Association told the board in the December meeting that they needed to have more leeway for planning purposes. Caplan said he understands the needs of the school district patrons when posting school calendars.

“There’s a lot of different stakeholder input that we get. There’s an interest from the high school to have the school year start earlier. You know, a couple of the major factors there is that we have high school athletics that start earlier than the first day of school. We also have AP exams in late May and really to be able to break up the semester system for kids in Treasure and the high school, so their semester is done before Christmas break. And, from a mental health perspective, it makes a lot more sense to have a clean break there.”

During the calendar discussion, Park City High School Student Board Representative, Steven Mitchell told board members some students want the extra Christmas break for focused study time. Caplan said they’ll continue to gather input from all stake holders, including students to find the best solutions to school calendar decisions.

“You know it was interesting, our student board member, Steven was one of those proponents of having the extra time to study and do work on finals and prepare. You know, our new principa, Roger Arbabi was a proponent of having it end beforehand. You now, I think a lot of our educators would prefer to end it beforehand. You know, similar to what happens in higher education and college. You know, you go to University and at the end of your semester, you take your exams and then you go home, and you have a month to decompress. I think it’s the same type of principle where it gives kids a mental break as opposed to working throughout the Christmas and New Years season.”

The 2019-2020 calendar can be found on pcschools.us under the calendar tab at the bottom of the web page.
