Basin Rec Seeks Input On Upcoming Trails, Projects

Basin Rec is in the process of facilitating a facility demands study. Director Brian Hanton outlines some of the questions they hope to answer.

“Do we have enough for the population base that we have, and the amount of activities that we do here?” Hanton continued, “What we’re going to do this year—we didn’t do it five years ago—was combine that community survey. That one we haven’t initiated, but we are going to be doing that soon. Then start that process with hopes to have that out to the community Januaryish, hopefully have some results by February and then complete that facility demands study by April. Then review our strategic masterplan all kind of looking at future expansion, Silver Creek Village, making sure that what the community wanted five years ago is similar to what we want now. We know the population has changed. The users have changed quite a bit. We want to make sure that we’re gearing our facilities towards what the community wants.”

The survey will be available online.

“We’ll have a link on our website, but we’ll also send it out to the permanent residents in Park City area." Hanton explained, "We’re hoping to team up with Park City Recreation as well since we have a lot of combined sports and programs together. We use a lot of the same facilities and making sure that we’re doing the community justice and not doing a lot of the same things in our own separate entities.”

The last survey Basin Rec heard a community cry for another ice sheet, Hanton explains why that hasn’t been built yet.

“There’s a development that’s happening out in Black Rock." Hanton said, "The plan is to have them help us with the overflow or need for more ice. We didn’t want to put $25 million into a facility then all of a sudden, this resort center builds three sheets of ice—that we could have utilized—that’s a mile away. Yes, it’s taking a little bit longer, but hopefully the community recognizes we’re saving them a little bit of money. We met with Amanda—the general manager for the ice rink she checks with them frequently not wanting to miss the boat—and she said yes. They’re putting footings in and they hope to have a sheet, or maybe two sheets, by next October.”

Hanton says they’ll potentially look to use the funds set aside for the rink towards the current ice rink, Silver Creek Village, or other facilities.

Hanton says the survey will also have a few questions about E-bikes.

“We did an impromptu survey probably a month and a half ago seeing what the interest is." Hanton continued, "We’ve had some community members come to our board meeting and ask about why not in the back country. Right now, we’re just staying the status quo with the city. There is a fear of people getting into areas where they probably can’t manage to get down. There are some safety factors in there, speeds going uphill with people coming down. We just want to make sure we’re doing our due diligence and trying to keep it a safe environment out there as much as possible.”
