Carol Haselton Emphasizes Richardson Flat Transparency in Town Council Re-election Bid

Hideout Town Council

The town of Hideout has four council seats open during this election season — councilor Carol Haselton currently occupies one of them and is running for another two-year term.

Haselton moved in a little more than two years ago. She was a member of the town planning commission for a short time before being appointed to the town council in the spring of 2020.

“I'm still very interested in regional planning and trying to collaborate with Wasatch County, Summit County Park City, and MIDA, having some input on the further development of the Rock Creek area of Jordanville State Park, regional transportation, hopefully getting a school in this area of Wasatch County, recreational opportunities, trails, affordable housing,” she said in an interview with KPCW.

Haselton was one of two lawmakers on the Wasatch County town’s council who voted against the annexation of 350 acres east of Park City near Richardson Flat — in Summit County.

She said she wants to see more transparency with Summit County and Park City's plans for developing the area.

"I just feel that part of their opposition is that they already had plans for Richardson Flat area,” she said. “And talking to different people, I can't be real specific. … I think it would be beneficial to Hideout to have some input into that property."

Haselton said if the annexation proceeds, she wants to see a town hall with a community center built on the land. She said additional land allows the town to expand trail networks for walking and biking.

She's not sure what’s next if the annexation doesn't happen.

Hideout has four open council positions. All four candidates are currently on the council and would take office barring the entry of write-in candidates.

Two candidates have filed to run for the Hideout mayor's open seat. Incumbent Mayor Phil Rubin, who filed for re-election, has told KPCW it was inappropriate to talk about his candidacy until the annexation vote. Dean Heavrin filed to challenge Rubin and has not responded to KPCW's requests for an interview.
