Child Shooting: "A Tragic Accident"

Summit County Sheriff's Office

The Summit County Sheriff’s office has updated the facts for the death of a young Kamas boy this week.

In a press release  issued Thursday evening, Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright said the young boy, originally reported to be 10 years old, is actually 11. He’s been identified as Cash Cover of Kamas. Cash died Wednesday evening after an accidental discharge of a firearm in the family home – that officials are calling "a tragic accident.”

According to Lt. Wright, Cash, his older brother, and their mother were outside their home before the accident. The two boys had permission to access a BB gun to shoot on the property. At some point, the two boys went into their home and got a handgun from a bedroom. Shortly after, the mother heard screaming coming from inside the home. When she entered, she discovered that Cash has been shot.

In a statement from the family, they wrote that Cash’s injury was not self-inflicted. They also said they appreciate the outpouring of love and support from the community and their friends and thanked all of the people who assisted Cash including the emergency responders, life fight and Summit County officials who did everything they could to help save his life. They asked that we respect their privacy and they will announce arrangements to celebrate Cash in the upcoming days.
