Christian Center of Park City Adds SNAP Sign Up

The Christian Center of Park City is now a sign-up location for those seeking SNAP benefits.

SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The program, formerly known as food stamps, allows lower income U.S. residents to purchase groceries. The Christian Center of Park City Programs Director Pete Stoughton explains the nonprofit Utahns Against Hunger approached the center after learning CCPC’s food pantry serves over 1,000 families a month.

“That’s a pretty significant impact," Stoughton said. "They actually requested if we could be a SNAP sign up location. It is a great and easy way for those in our community who may not know about that resource they can actually utilize it and sign up with us.”

The Christian Center’s food pantry is open to all. That differs from the requirements to participate in SNAP.

Receiving SNAP benefits requires filing out a 17-page application. Stoughton says they’ve trained their staff to aid those filing out applications. Stoughton says that someone in a household does have to be a documented resident to participate in the program, although it does have different options for people under certain visa programs.

There are additionally income eligibility requirements. Once someone receives a SNAP card, they can use it like a credit card to purchase food.

“So they would receive a SNAP card and the benefits that go along with that," Stoughton explained. "Purchasing power, there's some limits to that. They can actually go to the Summit County farmers market and purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. They get double the points in their purchasing power through that.”

Stoughton says adding the SNAP sign-up location to the pantry is just one way the pantry is making upgrades to their user’s experience.

“We are changing the way that our food pantry is laid out," Stoughton continued. "One of the areas that were really trying to grow is dissemination of information. As people come in we've done a really great job—and if you haven't seen our food pantry come by it's a self-service food pantry it's really beautiful—but we want to really have jobs and housing and other resources that people can have access to immediately in a really non-threatening and safe environment. This is one of those components that we’re trying to embed in that experience.”

The food pantry is located at 1238 Deer Valley Drive and is open Monday-Saturday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
