Corinne Bailey Rae Puts Your Favorite Records On

Singer songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae will be taking the Big Stars Bright Nights Stage on Friday to play some of her favorite records.

Corinne Bailey Rae comes to Park City on the heels of shows all across the globe. Bailey Rae has been on the road since April. She says that she loves playing live.

“I love playing live. There’s such a special thing about being in a place, everyone all together just for one time only. We were over in California and I thought it would be really nice to go over to Utah and to experience this festival which I haven’t played at before. I always like playing live, I think there’s something really honest about it. We don’t use backing tracks, we don’t use click tracks. It’s always about the moment. It’s always about the audience and what they dictate and if they’re having a good time we’ll play a song longer or we’ll open it up to the audience or we’ll take requests or whatever it is. We just really like being in the moment. Any opportunity I can get to play live I always take it.”

Bailey Rae says the show will feature music from her three albums as well as an EP she released.

“I’m going to play us a retrospective of my work so far. I want to connect with people and play songs from all three of the records. Hopefully some of people’s favorite songs of mine, get people singing along and have a good time together.”

Right now, Corinne Bailey Rae is working in LA doing some composing work.

“I’m writing lots of things for film and television I spend a lot of time in Los Angeles and I’m able to go into studios and find out what tv shows their making or what films their making. I really enjoy working to getting a mood of a particular tv show and trying to write a song. I bumped into someone the other day who’s making a feature film about an artist I really like so that immediately started sparking my imagination. I like to research and read, I like to read a biography and then think about key themes and important scenes and mood. And then pitching for films, I really like the practice it gives me as a song writer. When certain things work out it’s a real joy that your idea works with the writer or the director or the producer or whoever it is that you align with.”

Bailey Rae is originally from Leeds, England. She says her physical location plays an important part in her creative process.

“I really like England, I like how green it is. I live in the North of England, about 200 miles up from London. I like being in a quieter city I really like the peace that it gives me. I find that’s an important part of my process I like to be in nature, I like to reflect, I like to be away from the machinery. I don’t like thinking of myself as someone who makes records and then tours and then is on to the next thing. I really like my music to be a result of the meditation that I do, the thinking, the traveling, the chance to play and improve and get a chance to write and all of those things. I really enjoy being a songwriter. There’s always quite a bit of time in between my records because I like to think, and I like to write and get settled in home. At the moment, I guess I am on more of a traveling adventure and enjoying this really long summer playing a lot of festivals all over the world. It’s a real privilege.”

Corinne Bailey Rae performs this Friday at City Park as part of the Big Stars Bright Nights Concert Series.
