Couple Who Robbed Park City Resident in Craigslist Scheme Sentenced

A Salt Lake couple arrested for robbing and assaulting a local resident last fall have been sentenced in Summit County’s Third District Court.

Rick Brough reports that the female of the pair has received no further time behind bars; but her husband was sentenced to what could be decades at the Utah State Prison.

The sentences were handed down in late August to 43-year-old Steven D. White and 38-year-old Amber Lynn Lands.

According to charging documents, a Park City resident hired Lands on Craigslist as a housecleaner. Last October 28th, after she gained entry to the residence, she sent a message to her husband, White, that it was time for him to come in the house and rob the occupant.

White reportedly punched the victim, inflicted at least three stab wounds, and demanded money. The pair fled the residence and were caught in another jurisdiction.

White has been confined at the State Prison for most of the time since his arrest, due to a parole violation.

He entered guilty pleas to a Count of Burglary, a Charge of Robbery and a Count of Aggravated Assault. All of those are Second-Degree Felonies.

He was sentenced to 2 to 20 years in prison on each Count, to be served consecutively. Deputy County Prosecutor Blake Hills told KPCW that due to sentencing laws, this works out for all practical purposes to 6 to 30 years, determining on the judgment of the Board of Pardons.

Lands pled Guilty to Aggravated Burglary, a Second-Degree Felony. She was given a 309-day jail sentence, but is credited for already serving that time behind bars, mostly at the Prison.

Her case is closed, although she has to deal with another case where she was on parole.

Prosecutor Hills said that the difference in the severity of the sentences for the two defendants is because of “the levels of cooperation and responsibility of the two defendants.”
