Construction on the Star Hotel on Main Street began Monday. The old façade will be deconstructed, with exception to the brick chimney and stone siding, which will be included in the reconstruction of the building.
The “significant” historic structure on 227 Main will be made to look the same as its 1920s historic form. Park City Deputy Chief Building Official Michelle Downard says the city will watch the project closely to be sure it complies with historical guidelines.
“There are several conditions of approval related to how the building needs to be reconstructed, consistent with how it appeared historically," Downard said. "So, those are going to be things that we’re going to be monitoring through the course of construction, just to ensure that that building is brought back to a condition that’s consistent with what we saw back in the 1920s.”
Construction manager Brian Brassey said he initially hoped to have the hotel demolished before Sundance began, but weather and the peak event season kept moving the project farther down the line.
The construction will likely impact Main Street traffic for the next two weeks while equipment is on the street. Lanes will be shifted to the east side of the road to maintain both directions of traffic, though it could be decreased to one lane or stopped occasionally for safety.
