Deer Creek Fire Has Burned 500 Acres

Lisa Boyle

A wildfire burning west of Deer Creek Reservoir has led to the evacuation of a nearby campground and officials have put the closest neighbors on alert.  The fire started below the Deer Creek Dam yesterday (Monday)about 2:40 p.m. Titled The Wheeler Fire, the fire has burned about 500 acres and closed the Cascade Springs campground and recreation area yesterday.

No homes are in danger at this point but officials are keeping their eyes on the closest neighborhood threatened by the fire – the  Canyons Meadows subdivision. State Road 92 and U.S. Highway 189 were closed briefly near the fire but had reopened Monday evening. Officials say the fire is about 5 percent contained. Residents were asked to carry a cell phone with them at all times – if an evacuation plan needs to be put into effect, they will be notified via an automated  phone call.

Summit County Emergency Manager Chris Crowley says there is no current threat to Summit County. Fire Warden Bryce Boyer and some county resources have been deployed. Today is a no burn day in Summit County.
