Fire Crews Work To Contain Human-Caused Fire In Summit County

Utah DWR

Summit County and Park City Firefighters are working to contain a human-caused fire that started Saturday morning in Henefer.

Officials believe the fire started Saturday morning around 11 a.m. By Sunday morning, they estimated that it had grown to 1,600 acres.

Patrick Harwood, with the Park City Fire Department, said a number of factors allowed the fire to spread.

“With the wind speeds that we had at the 25 mile an hour range, it spread rather quickly,” he said. “There's actually two fires that converged and made the big push.”

Harwood said there's a mandatory evacuation of the Henefer-Echo Wildlife Management Area. He said no structures are threatened at this point, but there has been vegetation loss.

Summit County and Park City Fire District are working together to contain the fire. There have also been aircrafts assigned to the area as well.

Harwood said right now there is no containment estimate.

“They’ll do a good portion of work today to try and get hard lines around it. And then they will make plans,” he said. “History says these things burn for quite a long time.”

He said it’s unlikely there will be any highway closures because of the fire, but there could be delays along frontage roads to move equipment.
