Gravel Truck Crashes At Deer Valley Roundabout

A gravel truck coming down Marsac Avenue lost control of its brakes and crashed at the Deer Valley Roundabout.

Uber Driver Brian Owens was driving down Marsac Avenue Tuesday morning after dropping off a passenger at Montage Deer Valley. He passed a gravel truck on the right side of the road, not unusual for Marsac Ave. Moments later Owens realized the truck behind him was blowing smoke and had lost its brakes.

Owens sped up to 60 mph, hoping to beat the truck to the runaway ramp where he assumed the gravel truck would stop. After passing the runaway ramp Owens pulled over in time to let the truck fly past him. Although Owens declined an interview with KPCW, he did make his dash cam footage available, which you can see here.   Owens said he followed the truck down the hill honking his horn to warn others of the out-of-control truck.

Local resident Caitlyn Elswick lives on Marsac Drive.  She said she woke up to a loud crash.

“When I woke up my house shook, and this big truck had to have been hauling butt past my house. Just seconds later you hear a big boom at the bottom of the street. I look outside and there’s just smoke and a bunch of people running down the street chasing after the truck saying that he ran his brakes out and he couldn’t stop.”

Eyewitnesses say the truck reached the Deer Valley Drive roundabout, went on the left side of the roundabout and ran into a black truck before crashing and turning on its side on the right side of the road just past the roundabout.

“I believe he hit a black truck, he almost hit the electric bus, I know that. He stopped by impaling the wall and running into that other vehicle unfortunately.”

Eyewitnesses at the scene say they saw the drivers of both the gravel truck and smaller black truck walk to an ambulance. Officials were on the scene Tuesday noon, cleaning up and directing traffic.

Elswick says that she was grateful that her boyfriend, who was just about to leave his driveway, wasn’t seriously injured.

“He was just about leaving for work in the morning and he was just about to back out of the driveway right before that truck passed. Thankfully he didn’t back out because he would’ve been hit by that truck and it would’ve broke my heart because it’s just right outside our house.”
