Green Up The Weekend With Composting, Shredding

Recycle Utah

Recycle Utah is holding a free composting workshop on Saturday.  According to the organization’s website, yard and food waste makes up approximately 30% of material sent to the landfills each year. Instead of throwing it away, you can turn those materials into nutrient-rich fertilizer by composting. The workshop is 10-11 am in the Recycle Utah center parking lot.

Also on Saturday, Recycle Utah and First Community Bank are holding a shredding event.  Recycle Utah Executive Director Carolyn Wawra says it’s a great way to securely get rid of those personal papers you may not want to just throw away.

"If you have files you’ve been meaning to go through, you can bring it to them," she said. "You literally put it in a bucket and watch the bucket go up in a truck and shreds it right in front of you so no need to be worried about them actually shredding your stuff.  You’ll see it happen right in front of your eyes. Everything they collect is recycled so that’s why we’re partnering with them."

Wawra added that the paper can have staples and paper clips, but people need to remove any big black clips and laminated items before dumping them in the shredder.  The shredding area will be outside First Community Bank in Park City, next to the Holiday Village theatre.
