For a district of nearly 5-thousand students, nine Park City community members – including one student - are part of the 19-member education master planning Steering Committee. This committee will present its findings about the district’s future vision for education and facilities this spring. The public has a few more opportunities to have their ideas considered.
More than half of the steering committee – 10 of the 19 members - is made up of school district, Park City, or Summit County employees. According to the future of learning website, the committee members’ objectives are to quote, “ensure that everyone in the community has a voice and the opportunity to get involved.”
So far, the public has had one opportunity to comment about the visioning process last fall and will have two more chances this week.
The steering committee has been meeting monthly since October. One more meeting is scheduled for March 12th to discuss “educational specifications.”
On April 16th the steering committee will present its final report to the Board of Education - the options it’s identified through this master planning process to implement an educational vision and facility updates.
The at-large steering committee members include Michael McCarthy, Peter Yogman, Joy Durling, Jim Tedford, JoAnn Funseth, Donna McAleer, Jennifer Jackenthal, Jodey Fey, and student Steven Mitchell.
Park City School District staff members include Emily Sutherland, Danny Fisher, Traci Evans, Julie Hastings, Patricia Munoz, and Eric Esquivel. Park City staff members include Lynn Ware-Peek and Jonathan Weidenhamer, Summit County staff includes Janna Young and Mary Christa Smith.
Since the master planning process started last fall, two community engagement open houses were held – both of them on the same night. Two more open houses are scheduled for tonight and tomorrow. The open house tonight is at Park City High School at 5 p.m. and on Thursday at Ecker Hill Middle School at 6 p.m.
Listening tours have also been scheduled at each school. That schedule starts March 5th at Ecker Hill Middle – followed by a meeting at Jeremy Ranch Elementary March 6th and at both Parley’s Park and McPolin elementary schools on March 7th.
The tour continues the following week on March 11th at Park City High, March 13th at Trailside Elementary and the final one March 14th at Treasure Mountain Junior High. All start times are at 5 or 5:30 pm. You can see the schedule at The Future of Learning Website.
