Once again, the County Council during their Public Comment period Wednesday heard from three young students, asking the county to institute a plastic bag ban.
In reply, Council Chairman Roger Armstrong—again—said they will have a conversation about it.
Armstrong told KPCW there are several factors to consider, among the pros and cons of a plastic bag ban.
“I don't know whether it winds up being a Snyderville Basin issue or a broad County issue. Again, we're talking large stores so on the East side I don't know if there's more than one. Kamas Foodtown, maybe Foodtown. So, I think we've got to take the temperature on the East side, the entire County is not homogenous in the same way that Park City is in terms of how we do those things, but it might be something that would fit with the Basin.”
Armstrong said that they might follow the same model as the Park City plastic bag ban. “I think it's possible. If you look at the research on it it's a little bit mixed in terms of the effectiveness. Making the artificial bags, and paper bags has an impact on climate above and beyond the plastic. So, I think we really do need to look at the positives and negatives but I think it's a conversation that’s worthwhile having.”
