A man died while hunting Wednesday night near Strawberry Reservoir.
The hunter who died was in his 50s. According to the Wasatch County Sheriff’s office, he and his family were hunting near the Aspen Grove campground, which is just south of Strawberry Reservoir.
Emergency responders found him unresponsive around 8:30 p.m. and couldn’t resuscitate him. It was in a rugged, remote area, and a helicopter flew his body away. Sheriff’s deputies, Wasatch County EMS, Search and Rescue, and a Life Flight unit responded.
At the time of this report, his body was with the medical examiner’s office, and the Sheriff’s office didn’t have a cause of death.
Within the same hour, a couple visiting from Idaho was driving toward Charleston Town from Midway and hit a cow. The people weren’t injured, but the cow died.
They were on Midway Lane just outside of Heber City near Southfield Road. The cow was black, and it was dark outside, so the driver didn’t see it.
The Utah Highway Patrol sergeant in charge of Wasatch County says there have been several cases of cars hitting cows in recent weeks.
“If you’re driving in the dark, you can’t out-drive your headlights to be able to see hazards that you’re approaching,” said Cameron Roden, Highway Patrol public information officer. “That also goes for curvy, windy roads or hills. You need to make sure that you only drive as far as you can see and then, be able to react to hazards that come in front of you.”
Later that night around 11, Highway Patrol also responded to a fire in a semi-truck trailer on Highway 40 near Strawberry Reservoir.
The truck had broken down earlier in the day, and the driver left. Troopers found four bales of hay on fire.
Fire crews put out the fire, and traffic was limited to one lane for about two hours.
Roden says authorities hadn’t discovered the cause of the fire on Thursday.
