Miller Claws Back Votes, Still Trails Kohler by 1,800 in Race for House District 54

Updated vote totals from Summit and Wasatch County saw Democrat Meaghan Miller inch closer to Republican Mike Kohler in the race for Utah House District 54. Miller still trails Kohler by about 1,800 votes.

Democrat Meaghan Miller gained just under 400 votes in the race for Utah House District 54 against Republican Mike Kohler as Summit County released their first batch of results since returning from a COVID-19 quarantine earlier this week. Miller still trails Kohler by 1,849 votes.

The district is a closely watched seat in the Utah Legislature and was decided by only 162 votes in 2018. House District 54 is made up of Wasatch County and the Park City area of Summit County. Wasatch County is seen as solidly conservative, while Park City is known as a liberal-leaning area of the state.

Full election night vote counts in Summit County were delayed after a positive COVID-19 test at the Summit County Clerk’s Office was reported on Monday. It was announced the office would be quarantined and would not be processing ballots received after last Friday, October 30th.

The clerk’s office returned to work on Thursday and Summit County announced on Saturday that all ballots received to date have been processed. Provisional ballots, mail-in with a qualifying postmark, and ballots that needed further verification and have been returned will be added for the official statewide canvas on November 17th. All vote totals are unofficial until the statewide canvas.

Miller was banking on big returns in her favor from the outstanding Summit County ballots in order to put her ahead of Kohler, but with only a small portion of votes still to be counted, Miller’s path to victory is steep.

Given how close the district has been in the past, Kohler told KPCW earlier this week that he won’t be celebrating anything until the results are certified on the 17th.
