Whether you’re in the area for a weekend ski trip or you’re a long time resident, a new guidebook on Park City, Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Range can offer insights on both popular and lesser known activities.
Summit County resident Maya Silver released her new guidebook titled Moon Salt Lake, Park City & the Wasatch Range: Local Spots, Getaway Ideas, Hiking & Skiingearlier this month.
The author has been living in Utah since 2016 and said while there are many existing guidebooks, many of them focus on just Salt Lake or desert areas, but none are all encompassing.
She said she didn’t want to focus on just one area. Instead she looked at places within driving distance from each other.
"So because everything was sort of within a feasible day or weekend trip, I thought it would be fun to group them together, and just diversify the opportunities in the area for people to come out here for," Silver said.
When writing her book, Silver said she pulled from her personal experiences in the state.
"I love writing about the areas I live in with, you know, the dining and the recreation opportunities and everything," she said. "I've been writing about the food and restaurants in Salt Lake and Park City area since I moved here. It was really fun to capture all of that, as well as the many recreation opportunities I take advantage of myself from climbing and mountain biking to skiing. So it was fun to write the proposal. And it was also really fun to read the book, but a lot of research"
She said she looked at well known events and spots in Utah, while also taking note of some of the more quirky features of the state.
"I was looking for both like the activities that characterize the area, obviously," she said. "You've got to cover the skiing, you've got to cover Sundance, things like that, but also some of the lesser known or less publicized aspects of various some of the more unique things like the land art here, Spiral Jetty and sun tunnels, which is technically not an area but I kind of grouped it in the weirdness of the Great Salt Lake."
As more information becomes available, and landscapes and businesses change, Silver said she will continue to update her book - both online and every few years in new editions.
