The Park City Newcomers Club was formed in 1995 to help welcome and matriculate new arrivals in town. But, oddly, many of the people who joined back then, are still part of the 350-member club. Their yearly luncheon is a big thank you to the members and the keynote speaker is a well-known restaurateur.
Carol Hazelton, one of the co-presidents of the Newcomers Club first came to Park City in 1972. She left after about 20 years, lived elsewhere for 26 years but returned to live in the area because grandchildren came along. Co-president Arabee Leary came to town three years ago but found there were all sorts of participants in the club, many who’ve lived in the Park City area for decades.
“And then others came here to ski and then of course they discovered the summer and then they came back to stay. So, a variety of ages. A lot of part time a lot of full-time people, couples, singles, everybody. It all just works out.”
Bill White owns multiple area restaurants. Leary says she heard him speak at an event he hosted a few years ago and this year, the dates add up to have him be the speaker.
“He has an agenda to tell his story and his journey and where he’s been and of course all of his restaurants. But right now, he’s into sustainability and education and agriculture. He has ranches and farms and he’s getting more into that and I think that will be his message.”
The Newcomers Club holds a monthly coffee at the Park City Community Church. Hazelton says it’s designed to have socializing, then a light brunch.
“And we have interesting speakers that are local. We had Feldman Stellie, a local geologist, the Harlows, Beethoven Society, Better Days 2020. So, it’s always something that’s very interesting for our members.”
The coffee event is held every second Wednesday of the month.
The luncheon will be at Silver Lake lodge at Deer Valley on September 11 starting at 11. Pasta, a mushroom galette, salads and Deer Valley desserts are on the menu, along with a signature cocktail available at the cash bar. Tickets are $45.00 for members and $55.00 for non-members.
