Citing local event fatigue, no street concert will be held as part of this year’s FIS Freestyle World Cup.
There’s been a long history of street dances as part of the World Cup ski races that Park City resorts have hosted over the years. The street dances started back in the 1980s – when the owners of the then Park City Ski Area - brought in the band America several years in a row. Over the years, the bands have changed – and Park City Mountain has since stopped hosting alpine World Cup races. Deer Valley though took over the tradition when it started hosting the Freestyle World Cup competitions.
Last year, Lupe Fiasco was brought in to perform for the 2019 Freestyle World Championships closing ceremony on Lower Main St.
However, this year, a concert won’t be held. Deer Valley Communications manager Emily Summers told KPCW that they cancelled the concert due to what she called “local event fatigue,” with World Cup falling directly on the heels of the Sundance Film Festival. Sundance runs January 23rd through February 2nd. World Cup kicks off February 6th and runs through the 8th. Last year, Sundance and the World Championships overlapped by three days.
Summers says Deer Valley plans to use some of the allocated funds that it would have spent on a concert to help support local non-profits through the Park City Community Foundation.
