One Book One Community Read Chosen

This year’s One Book One Community choice has been announced - and features the memoir of a former Park City resident.

The 2020 One Book One Community read is Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country. It was written by Pam Houston and published in 2019. The One Book One Community program is a partnership with Park City and Summit County libraries, along with Dolly’s Bookstore and Utah Humanities. Park City Adult Services Librarian Kate Mapp says Houston’s newest book is very appropriate for today…

“We felt like her messaging with this book speaks to our community right now with what we’re going through.,” Mapp said. “And just to read a quote from her book, is her book is ‘a meditation on how to live simultaneously inside the wonders and the grief to love the damaged work and do what I can do to help it thrive.’ And we just thought this would be a beautiful read for right now in our community.”

It is an adult-themed book and recommended for those in high school and older…

With the public libraries closed – no books can be checked out but Mapp says they’ve worked through the Utah state library system to acquire a simultaneous use license – so anyone who wants to read the digital version can download it through the Overdrive or Libby apps.

“And so, if you go to those apps or online, you can download the e-book and everyone can do that all at once – there are no holds or waiting cues,” Mapp said.

The hope is to bring Houston to Park City this fall when she will provide a community reading as well as a writing workshop.

“She is already scheduled to come out September 10th at 7 pm at the Park City Library in the auditorium and she will be doing a writing workshop earlier that day at the Summit County Library,” Mapp said.
