Park City Awarded $10,000 Grant For Biochar Project

US Forest Service

The National League of Cities in March awarded Park City Municipal a grant to help address Park City’s 2030 net-zero carbon emissions goal.

Park City was chosen as one of eight cities for the 2019 Leadership in Community Resilience program. Recipients are awarded $10,000 from the National League of Cities, as well as technical and professional assistance, to pursue projects that help them build resilient and sustainable communities.

Park City Environmental Analyst Darcy Glenn says the City was awarded the grant to incorporate biochar, a charcoal-like substance made by burning material such as dead leaves and plants, into soil, to mitigate the effects of wildfires. Biochar may help soil retain water and nutrients.

Glenn says the project is still in the planning phase, and there will likely be events in the spring and fall demonstrating how biochar can be used.

Emily Means hadn’t intended to be a journalist, but after two years of studying chemistry at the University of Utah, she found her fit in the school’s communication program. Diving headfirst into student media opportunities, Means worked as a host, producer and programming director for K-UTE Radio as well as a news writer and copy editor at The Daily Utah Chronicle.
