Park City Council To Consider Contributing To Children's Justice Center And Upgrading City Park

Among several items, today’s agenda for the Park City Council includes good news for the Children’s Justice Center—and for those who want to multi-task while they’re at City Park.

In the council’s agenda at about 5:00 pm, they will discuss contributing some $75,000 to the County Children’s Justice Center. Earlier, it seemed doubtful that the city would be able to make a contribution. Assistant City Manager Matt Dias explained what they can and cannot do.

“Typically, we can’t contribute with capital funds,” Dias explained. “Once we allocate funding toward a capital budget, we can’t then use those funds to support a piece of property or something that we wouldn’t actually own. So this is operating budget money, previous-year money that we could be carrying forward. So it has a little bit extra flexibility. Council signaled pretty early on that they were interested in providing some level of support for the Children’s Justice Center. Obviously, it’s one of our most vulnerable populations.”

He said they were a bit late making this financial decision due to their budget process.

“Typically, we would have done something like this during our budget process, but we were just unable,” Dias continued. “Funds were very, very tight this year. This is previous-year money that’s contingency money. So, our fiscal year closed on the 30th. We’re now two or three weeks into a new fiscal year. Our analysts hold back a little bit of money, in the event we have a budget that goes over budget, or revenues and expenditures don’t line up. So, our folks are feeling a little bit more confident, there’s a little bit more surety that there aren’t any outstanding invoices that we need to cover.”

On another item, the council will vote on providing wireless service to City Park. While some might argue that’s a place to leave the rest of the world behind, Dias said they are providing a worthwhile service to the community.

“I guess we think of it as a gathering place for the community,” Dias said. “We have all sorts of night games and sports leagues. I bring my children down there on weekends. I think it is an amenity that we have to be realistic, we allow people to make that choice for themselves. So, for the public that visits the MARC and visits the library, this system will be more or less exactly the same. It’s Park City Guess Network. We think it’s going to be a nice amenity, if you’re there with your kids, and they have a soccer game, and maybe someone needs to do some work , and they’re juggling summer camps and other things, we think it’s going to be a good amenity for the community.”
