Recycle Utah Prepares For Post-Holiday Rush

Recycle Utah

Recycle Utah is preparing for arguably their busiest time of the year.

Recycle Utah’s Executive Director Carolyn Wawra says the week between Christmas and New Years will see lines out the door with the nonprofit hauling away their cardboard bin daily and seven to eight tons of glass recycled.

“Our biggest, top recommendation is to pre-sort,” Wawra stated. “Come to the center with everything, all cardboard together, put boxes within boxes, glass sorted. If you want to go to that next level sorting between green and clear and brown definitely recommend that so you can just dump your bins when you get there. Then separating your plastic out from the Cardboard. It's really hard to dig all the wrapping out of the cardboard box. If you get a TV you might have Styrofoam and plastic all in there. The more presorting you can do the easier it is when you come in. We’ll have volunteers that are probably going to approach the back of your car and help you unload things that makes it a little bit easier on them if it's really clear where everything goes.”

Recycle Utah is looking for additional volunteers, you can call 435-649-9698. Wawra adds another bit of advice for those looking to recycle their holiday wrappings.

“If you can hold on to it for the first week in January, it's a big local secret to wait,” Wawra explained. “Let all the second homeowners and tourists do all the recycling. If you're a local just hold on to it. The first week in January will be a little bit more calm, you probably won’t have to wait in line.”

Wawra reminds recyclers that ribbons, and bows cannot be processed at the center, she recommends re-using them or throwing them away. Recycle Utah closes at 4:00 on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and is closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Recycle Utah is also preparing for their annual Green Business Awards on January 14th.

“The nominees this year are ESTE Pizza, Mountain Flower Apparel, Park City Storage, Savoury Kitchen and Townshends Tea,” Wawra continued. “There's a panel of judges to select the winners. Each of those nominees has written a case for their support of why they should win. The judge will be evaluating those and the work on their goals.”

Additionally, the businesses will be evaluated on their innovative and impactful ideas, and their commitment and excitement in the program. Additionally, Recycle Utah gives a People’s Choice award where all members of the Green business program are eligible. The award is given based on results of online voting here.
