Saddle Fire Burns 200 Acres, Suspected Arsonist Apprehended

Mitchel Burns

Fire officials reported last night that the Saddle Fire located in the hills to the North of Midway had reached 200 acres and was 0% contained.

The Saddle Fire started a little before 1:00 pm on Tuesday afternoon, winds fanned the flames to the north of Interlaken growing up to 200 acres by Tuesday evening.

The fire has not threatened any structures at this point but as a precaution a handful of homes were evacuated on Tuesday afternoon, with others on standby. Wasatch County Sheriff’s Department asks Interlaken and Dutch Hills residents have medications and personal belongings to last for 48 hours should an evacuation be necessary. The evacuation site is at the LDS Church located at 165 North Center in Midway. Additionally, the Dutch Hollow Trail System along with ‘The Phosphate’ and ‘The Face’ trails at Wasatch Mountain State Park have been closed.

The fire is the fourth in the area in the past week. The first occurred last Wednesday afternoon, fires two and three occurred Monday. Wasatch County Sheriff's department announced Tuesday evening they had apprehended a juvenile suspect in connection to all four fires, they say it appears the suspect acted alone.

Progress on the fire was also halted around 3:00 pm when a resident flew a drone near the fire, which is also a crime in Utah.

Wasatch County Fire District, State Lands and Forestry and other government agencies are on the scene of the fire on state land, air support has also been assigned to the incident.
