Saturday Brings New High of COVID-19 Cases in Utah

Utah set another record for COVID-19 Saturday, reporting 546 new cases.  The statewide total is now 11,798.  There was one more death, a Weber County man over the age of 85, bringing the total number of fatalities to 121 since March.

Summit County has 426 cases, up four from Friday.  Wasatch County has 326 cases, up nine from Friday.

On Friday, Dr. Angela Dunn, the state epidemiologist, said one in three new cases were tied to an outbreak at a meat processing facility in Cache County, which is in northern Utah.  The Bear River Health District covers Cache County and has reported rapidly increasing numbers all week, coming in at 707 cases Saturday, the second highest amount of any county except Salt Lake County, which has a 6,086 cases and a much higher population.

Also on Friday, Governor Gary Herbert announced the state would remain at the yellow, low-risk reponse level for COVID-19 despite an appointed board recommending going to green, which is the "new normal."

Both Dunn and Herbert advised residents to continue practicing safe social distancing, good hygiene, thorough hand washing, and wearing masks whenever you are closer than six feet to other people, other than those in your immediate household.
