Sheriff: Driver Stopped To Avoid Hitting Youngster But Then Hit Another

Summit County Sheriff's Office

Summit County Sheriff deputies responded to an accident in Oakley where a driver stopped to avoid hitting a child on a bike—but then struck another youngster.

The incident report said the accident occurred Wednesday night, July 15, on Rodeo Circle in Oakley.

The deputies determined that two children on bicycles failed to stop at a stop sign. The driver, a 51-year-old Oakley man, said he braked for the first child. He kept his eyes on that youngster, but when he began to slowly move forward, he felt his car hit something and realized it was a second bicycle.

The injured six-year-old child was not wearing a helmet and was struck by the front bumper of the car. The youngster was taken to the Park City Hospital in stable condition and was later taken to a Salt Lake hospital with a skull fracture.

The driver was not issued any citations.
