Soldier Hollow Sheepdog Classic Is Back This Weekend

Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce

As droves of visitors come to downtown Midway for Swiss Days this weekend, there’s another popular event happening just down the road.

The Soldier Hollow Classic will bring the world’s top working sheepdogs, bird shows and a long list of other activities and vendors.

The sheepdog competition begins Friday at 8 a.m. at the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center’s main competition field. The four-day event continues through Labor Day Monday.

The event features award-winning professionally trained sheepdogs showing the full range of their abilities.

Attendees can watch dogs guiding sheep around Wasatch meadows into small pens as the main contest. Trainers will also show off their dogs’ abilities navigating an agility course and leaping into pools for broad-jump distance.

Later in the mornings bring food vendors, the Earthwings raptor bird show and activities like face painting. By the time the bagpipe performances and beer garden open at 11 each day, the festivities will be in full swing. The days wind down around 5 p.m.

Tickets are available online or at the event. They’re $3 cheaper if bought in advance, and there are options for adults, children, seniors and families.

The event is expected to draw thousands, along with hundreds of thousands possibly descending upon Midway for Swiss Days.

Swiss Days is an annual tradition since the 1940s and the second largest annual event in Utah, following Pioneer Day. That’s according to state tourism numbers. It offers an outdoor craft fair, 10k race, parade, live entertainment and food booths with traditional dishes made on site.

Both Swiss Days and the Soldier Hollow Classic were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19.
