Summit Community Gardens Fills Whole Sunday With Garden Activities

Summit Community Gardens

The Summit Community Gardens Second Sunday event is coming up this weekend.

This Sunday is the final Second Sunday event where the Summit Community Gardens have activities planned all day long, beginning with 8 a.m. yoga in the gardens. Following that, at 9 a.m. Summit Community Gardens Executive Director Colie Belieu says Park City Municipal Sustainability Manager Luke Cartin will be the featured speaker at the Hugo Coffee-sponsored Coffee Talks in the Garden.

“He’s going to be talking about how sustainability at a community level is the best way to approach the climate issues we're facing, and specifically focusing on how community gardens are the key to social health for local residents, which is super awesome to be hosting this," Belieu said. "So, I really encourage people to come out and embrace this opportunity.”

From 10 to noon, folks can get their hands dirty with some volunteer work on the Community Gardens garden plot expansion. And at 5 p.m. is when the main event begins—music in the garden, plus a cooking demonstration with fresh produce from the garden.

“This weekend, we’ll have Basil Katz and Cruz, which is a new duo—singer/songwriters that kind of harmonize together and share songs," Belieu said. "While that's going on, parents and families can enjoy the lawn space, listening to the music with picnics and their lawn chairs, while their kids are enjoying some activities, both by Summit Community Gardens and our nonprofit partners.”

Next week, Summit Community Gardens continues its programming with classes in anticipation of harvest time. On Aug. 13, they’re hosting a flower harvest and bouquet design workshop, and on Aug. 15, Belieu says the Gardens staff has tips for difficult-to-harvest vegetables.

"We'll be going over some ways to first observe when to harvest some things that people might not always know, like potatoes, carrots and garlic is what we're focusing on," Belieu said. "Signs of when to harvest them, and then how to most successfully harvest them, because it can be a little bit tricky. And then garlic, specifically, we’ll go over the best way to cure that and store it."

On Aug. 25, the Summit Community Gardens and EATS Park City is hosting its fourth annual DIG In! dinner, in honor of National Family Meals month, starting in September.

"The meal serves as a celebration of local food in a beautiful space as well as the community at large," Belieu said. "Tickets are going fast. It always sells out before the event, so there’s still tickets available at https://eatsparkcity.org/dig-in/, in so I encourage people to go and get their ticket today."

More information about workshops and events at the Summit Community Gardens is available at summitcommunitygardens.org or on the Gardens’ Facebook and Instagram.
