Summit Land Conservancy Summer Activities

Summit Land Conservancy has a few events happening this month and their big fundraiser out at the Blue Sky Ranch in August.

KPCW has an outline of activities and an update on potential future offices for the Conservancy.

The monthly Moonshine Adventure sponsored by Summit Land Conservancy and Mountain Trails Foundation happens on, July 16th. They have hiking, running or mountain biking options.

“Like to take people out to play in the dark. Get a different view on the open spaces. So, they meet at 8 o’clock at night at the Quinn’s Junction trail head. It’s our staff and Mountain Trails staff and volunteers and we go out and look at things under a different light.”

Wild animals are a concern and Summit Land Conservancy Executive Director, Cheryl Fox along with KPCW’s News Director, Leslie Thatcher encourage vigilance.

“We had seen just a number of big…I guess they’re called hares, not rabbits, they’re bigger than rabbits, out in the Round Valley area, so beware of those?”

“Very dangerous bunnies.”

Summit Land Conservancy holds bimonthly hops hunting hikes and Sunday, the 7th they’re meeting at 9:30 in the gravel lot south of the Marsac Building. Fox says they plan to hike the Virginia Mine Claims route to check on the crop.

Fox says they’re keeping an eye on the plants, hoping all the wet weather will bring a robust bounty for their signature beer making in the fall.

“I think it will be really interesting this year, compared to last year, when you know the hops, we harvested last summer at the end of the year were dry, very small. And, this year they’ve had so much moisture. I hope that they will be large and lush.”

Fox says Blue Sky Bash tickets are still available but they’re going fast. The fundraiser is August 24th and tickets can be purchased at wesaveland.org.

Summit Land Conservancy and Mountain Trails are considering joining together to purchase a building.

“Well, we’re still very much in the discovery phase of this. Looking at what might be possible. What it would cost us. But what both organizations have realized is if we continue to try to rent in this community, we will be putting millions of dollars into the pockets of a landlord somewhere. And, we realize, we could put more money back into our missions if we were able to find a place that we could buy and then after 20 years, that funding could go back to open space and trails.”

They’ve approached Park City Municipal about a piece of property at Quinn’ s junction which is deed restricted, but Fox feels Summit Land Conservancy and Mountain Trails meet the conditions required to build on the land.

“The deed restriction says you can still build things there. But they’re specific what you can build, and it has to reference protecting the open space or protecting the recreational uses that are out there. It is close to the work we do so it makes sense to be out int hat location.”

They’re still in the discovery process and plan to bring another proposal to City Council by the end of July.
