Summit Land Conservancy Will Go Online To Celebrate Open Space

Summit Land Conservancy

The organizers of Summit Land Conservancy are still working to save the outdoor areas that nurture all of us—even while they’re socially isolating and indoors.

Conservancy Director Cheryl Fox also talked to KPCW about a traditional event that’s coming up—in a non-traditional way.

Fox said that their biennial Conservation Breakfast is coming up next week—the only real fundraiser they have.    The Conservancy has been hosting the breakfast every two years since 2008.

But Fox said they thought long and hard and decided to have the Breakfast as a “virtual” gathering.    They didn’t want to postpone the event, because that would run into their gala scheduled for August.

“We thought it would be great just to gather our community together, and to say, we know this is a hard time.  We know not everybody can give.  But we hope everybody can come.  So we’re moving this to a virtual platform.  Nobody that we know of has really done this kind of thing before.  So we’re stepping on untrod ground, if you will.  We’re pioneering things a little bit.  But on the other hand, we feel like it is important to get the community together and celebrate some of the things that are nurturing us at this time and giving us resilience.”

The breakfast is free of charge, set for April 17th at 8:30 a.m.

Fox said there’s a couple of positive factors about holding the event this way.    They’re not limited on the number of attendees, and supporters who are out of state can participate.

She also had details about their guest speaker.

“Our speaker is Eyee Hsu and she’s one of the co-founders of Mountain Town 2030, and also one of the forces sort of behind the Park City Foundation’s Climate Impact Fund.  They’re trying to figure out what can we do here in Park City to mitigate our carbon footprint.  We think that Eyee’s going to give a really interesting presentation.  She was formerly a broadcaster, so she’s articulate and has a lot of really interestings things to say.”

Cheryl Fox, who added that to RSVP, you can go online to their site, at “wesaveland.org” and link to “Happenings.”

On a related item, she said they’re still hoping to have summer camps, and are now taking registrations.     Fox said they will give out refunds in the event of a COVID cancellation.

She said the camps will run from late June to early August.   Each camp will have a maximum of 12 kids, plus counselors.

Known for getting all the facts right, as well as his distinctive sign-off, Rick covered Summit County meetings and issues for 35 years on KPCW. He now heads the Friday Film Review team.
