Thursday COVID-19 Update: 463 New Cases Statewide, Continuing Plateau Trend

New COVID-19 cases were down week over week Thursday but not by much.

The Utah Department of Health announced 463 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, which is about 10 fewer cases than the state saw at the same time last week.

The state’s 7-day rolling average has continued to decline. The average is now 380 cases per day, down from last week’s average of 386. During his weekly COVID-19 briefing, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said the state has been at a plateau for a few weeks.

"We're still declining, but declining very, very slowly," Cox said. "The race against the virus is still real. The importance of tamping this virus down now, while we have the upper hand, is so critical for lots of reasons … to avoid the variants that we're seeing across the country … make sure that we don't have to go through this again in a year for any reason."

And State Epidemiologist Angela Dunn said despite the plateau, the virus has been spreading within specific groups.

"We are seeing local outbreaks in schools and tourist areas of the state," Dunn said. "But really what's preventing a large surge from happening statewide is vaccination. These outbreaks are being driven by variants and by populations that can't get vaccinated."

In the Wasatch Back, Summit County reported four new cases, which is the same as last Thursday. Wasatch County reported three new cases - up compared to last Thursday when the county saw four.

Both Summit and Wasatch Counties are in the moderate level of Utah’s COVID-19 transmission index

There were 6,402 people tested for the first time statewide, with 16,041 total tests administered. On average 3.5% of “tests over tests” are coming back positive, while average percent positivity for “people over people” is 6.5%, both averages are up from last week.

26,895 people were vaccinated for COVID-19 since Wednesday. Utah has now administered 2,124,832 vaccines.

Summit County has administered 43,897 total vaccines and Wasatch has given out 22,219 doses.

The Utah Department of Health reported seven new deaths, but noted all of them are from before April 1. To date, 2,197 Utahns have died due to COVID-19.

The department also reported 29 new hospitalizations. There are 142 people in the hospital for COVID-19, in the state. Around 77% of all referral center ICU beds are in use.
