Thursday COVID-19 Update: Vaccinations Slow Down, 418 New Cases Statewide, 6 New Deaths

The Utah Department of Health reported roughly 15,000 more vaccinations Thursday. Last Thursday the department saw nearly 18,000 new vaccinations, and two Thursdays ago that number was almost 27,000.

Vaccinations throughout the state have clearly started to slow down. But speaking during the governor’s weekly COVID-19 briefing, Lt. Gov. Diedre Henderson said more than half of the eligible population in Utah has received their first dose.

"We've got almost 58% of eligible people in Utah that have received at least one dose of vaccine, which is really encouraging," she said. "46% of them have been fully vaccinated, which also is good news. But we need to do better, we need to do a lot better. And we need to do better as quickly as we can."

Summit County has administered 48,474 total vaccines; 86% of eligible residents have received their first dose. And Wasatch has given out 23,347 doses; 56% of adults in Wasatch have received their first shot.

Cases were down considerably in the Wasatch Back. Summit County reported four new cases, down from last Thursday when the county saw 11. Wasatch County reported one new case. Last Thursday the county saw six.

The Utah Department of Health announced 418 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, which is 23 more cases than the state saw at the same time last week.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases is now 328 per day, down from last week’s average of 346.

There were 6,562 people tested for the first time statewide, with 14,677 total tests administered. On average 3.5% of “tests over tests” are coming back positive, while average percent positivity for “people over people” is less than 7%.

The Utah Department of Health reported six new deaths, but noted that three of them are from before April 13. To date, 2,255 Utahns have died due to COVID-19.

There are 152 people in the hospital for COVID-19, in the state. Around 74% of all referral center ICU beds are in use.
