Two Democratic Party Candidates File For Vacant Summit County Recorder Position

The Summit County Democratic Party will be meeting this Thursday, to choose between two party members who have filed to run for Summit County Recorder on this November’s ballot.

Since no other contenders have filed for the position, it’s likely the choice of the Democrats will be the person holding that recently-vacated position.

The elected County Recorder, Mary Ann Trussell, resigned her position as of July 1st.

The filing window opened last week at the County Clerk’s office and two candidates threw their hats in the ring—Rhonda Francis a Coalville resident and long-time staffer in the office, who is now the acting recorder—and Alex Natt, an attorney in Park City.

There were no applications from Republicans or other candidates. Therefore, said County Democratic chair Cheryl Butler, the winner of the vote next Thursday will likely be the recorder.

“It’s very likely that whoever is the chosen candidate on Thursday will be the only name on the ballot in November”

It’s also the case that Primary Election Day has passed. So, the winner just has to get a majority of the vote at the meeting.

“If we have multiple candidates, three or four or five, we have a different voting procedure. With two candidates it’s pretty straightforward.”

The meeting will be held at the Park City Library, in the 3rd floor community room at 8:00 pm.

Butler said the delegates will hear from both candidates.

“We’ve asked each of the candidates to give us a resume and answer a short questionnaire. That will be sent out to each of our county delegates who will be attending the meeting on Thursday. The meeting is open to the public, but the county delegates are the ones that have voting privileges, so it’ll be their ballots that are cast to make the decision.” Butler continued, “They’ll have a chance to read up on the candidates ahead of time. I’ve asked both candidates to be present. They will be each given five minutes to introduce themselves, once again, to the delegates and talk about why they think they should be the county recorder.”

The party is also called on to submit a name to the County Council who will serve as interim Recorder for the rest of this year.

Butler said that both Francis and Natt have put in their names for the interim job. The party will also take nominations from the floor.

The Recorder’s position on the November ballot is up for two years—to fill out the rest of Trussell’s unexpired term.
