The recent decision to close part of Rob’s Tail, which is above the Sun Peak neighborhood, was done because the land owner, Vail Resorts has concerns over safety and liability. The Sun Peak Homeowners Association, Basin Recreation and Vail Resorts are working to come up with a work around for next winter. But for now, the trail is closed about a mile up from the trail head.
“So, Park City Mountain does own a portion of Rob’s. And, through some employee turnover on our side, we weren’t made aware of all of that stuff. I guess we didn’t do our research well enough. We thought it was through the Sun Peak neighborhood. And, once we dove a little bit further, we recognized it was through Vail and Park City Mountain. And with that, we have our easements with Vail, I think it’s May 15th through the end of October is where we have access on those trails.”
The trail has been open year-round for years. Vail holds trail easements that allows access from May 15 to the end of October.
“So, we’ve talked with their ski patrol and their mountain operations and we’re going to work with them over the summer and see if we can come up with some alternate means of getting down if we’re allowed to go up there.”
Hanton says if people continue to ignore the restrictions, they could be cited and prosecuted. He says it’s the same as ducking a ski rope.
The closed portion is about a mile of Robs Trail which will remain closed through this winter. Next year they’re hoping to have built a trail that cuts around Vail’s property and allows use all season long.
“Especially with the snow they’ve had this year and again, they talk about the spring slide potential. And knowing that it could cause some problems and once we found out about, one the property and also the avalanche danger, we didn’t feel safe sending people up there and saying it’s okay.”
While many Sun Peak property owners use their own neighborhood trails to access the Rob’s network, the Homeowners Association is not involved in Vail’s decision. Hanton hopes Basin Rec, Vail and the Sun Peak Homeowners Association will work together on new trail options for next winter.
