Utah Governor: "There's No Place Better" for Winter Olympics

KPCW

A group of elected Utah leaders are looking at potentially hosting another Olympic Winter Games.  On Monday, they announced the formation of an official Olympic/Paralympic Exploratory Committee (OEC).

The United States Olympic Committee announced last Friday that it would like to put forth a bid for an upcoming Winter Olympics, possibly in 2026 or 2030.   Utah hosted the games in 2002.  Today in his monthly news conference, Utah Governor Gary Herbert said, "There's no place better to host a Winter Olympics than here in Utah."  He also mentioned that refurbishing Olympic venues might cost taxpayers $40 million.

The Utah Sports Commission announced the OEC will be co-chaired by Wayne Niederhauser, Utah Senate President, Jeff Robbins, Utah Sports Commission President and CEO, and Fraser Bullock, who was chief operating officer of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 games.   Other members of the committee will be announced at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
