Wasatch County Council Agenda Includes Discussions About Farmland

Items at Wasatch County Council’s meeting Wednesday include discussions regarding farmland in the county.

Wasatch County Council meets remotely via video conferencing Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 in addition to updates on the Wasatch County Health Directive the council will attend to more normal functions. Among those include considering amending code related to Farm Preservation Regulations and consider creating a Rural Preservation Subdivision ordinance. The ordinance is meant to accommodate a specific development that wanted a more rural feel. County planner Austin Corry outlined some of those changes in a previous discussion about the proposal in a January meeting.

“Update the intents statement in the farm preservation ordinance to focus more on open space and lower density, rather than on families and farm management,” Corry continued. “Add an additional option under the farm preservation. Right now you're allowed to do a five lot subdivision. One of those lots has to be 20 acres, the rest of the lots can be as small as one acre. So this would add another option in there that would allow a standard subdivision of six acres or greater for every lot size. It would also remove the family relationship requirement that's in the eligibility criteria of the farm preservation. Then it removes the 10-year expiration on the deed restriction for the farm preservation, and it applies a deed restriction to the entire subdivision.”

Additionally, council will consider an ordinance presented by councilman Steve Farrell. The ordinance authorizes the use of the Urban Farming Assessment Act in the county. Giving residents the option for farmland that is at least one acre in size but no more than five acres to be declared as greenbelt.

Council will also consider a resolution that would give property owners more time to pay their taxes without penalty. The proposed resolution would waive penalties and interest due because of late payment of business personal property taxes due between January 1, 2020 through August 15th, 2020. The waiver applies to all personal property taxes due between the start of the year and mid-August as well.
