This week, KPCW is proud to announce that Michal Biskup is the winner of the KPCW Water Waste Contest.
Twelve-year-old Michal found his entry while on his way to a school sport:
"I took this photo while I was biking to soccer practice, when I passed Ecker Hill Middle School, I noticed that the sprinklers were set up so that they watered the concrete more than the grass. this is a problem because less water got to the plants and more got to the concrete, where it would evaporate or go into a sewer.
"I would have fixed this particular situation by originally building the sprinklers so that the water would not land on the concrete, but on the grass. Or, I would move the sprinklers over."
The KPCW Water Waste Contest is open to kids ages 3 to 18 in Summit and Wasatch counties. Kids should take a photo of water being wasted outdoors and then explain why its wasteful and how they would solve the problem. We'll have weekly winners and prizes and one Grand Prize at the end of the summer! Contest details here
