Wednesday COVID-19 Update: 658 Cases Statewide, More Than 900,000 Total Vaccines Administered

After an increase in new COVID-19 cases week over week for the last two days, Utah finally saw a decrease in new cases Wednesday.

Utah saw 658 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, which is about 70 fewer cases than the state saw at the same time last week.

In the Wasatch Back, Summit County reported 18 new cases, which is the highest case count the county has seen in more than two weeks - and is up from last Wednesday’s count of 10.

Wasatch County reported two new cases, which is significantly down from last Wednesday when the county saw 12 new cases.

There were 7,955 people tested for the first time statewide, with around 18,159 total tests administered. The 7-day rolling average for “tests over tests” positivity is about 4%, while the average percent positivity for “people over people” is around 9%.

Utah’s Department of Health reported two new deaths. To date, 1,992 Utahns have died due to COVID-19, including 10 from Summit County and 20 from Wasatch County.

The department also reported 30 new hospitalizations. There are 175 people in the hospital for COVID-19, in the state. Around 71% of all referral central ICU beds are in use.

There were 23,904 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine administered since Tuesday, bringing the total number to 902,391 doses administered. Summit and Wasatch Counties are registering to vaccinate residents 50-years or older and people with certain underlying medical conditions.
