Sundance FIlm Festival

On today's Morning Mix, guitarist Kris Lager of the Kris Lager Band will be our in-studio musical guest. Brian Richards, Executive Director of Mountain Town Music will be in to discuss the local non-profit’s winter programming; and Junior Richard, Venue Manager for The Cabin will be on to announce their schedule of special events during the 10 days and nights of the Sundance Film Festival. All that and of course we will have the upcoming live music events in and around town.

With crowd-drawing events such as Sundance and the World Championships coming up, city staff are contemplating how best to transport the increased number of guests who will be in town—in the event the current fleet can’t handle the demand. KPCW’s Emily Means has more.

Sundance Institute

The Sundance Film Institute has unveiled its line-up of 112 feature films scheduled for the 2019 Film Festival.

Next year’s festival is scheduled to run from January 24th to February 3rd, in Park City and other locations around the Wasatch Front.

As usual, the heart of the festival is the slate of Competition films for both Dramatic and Documentary categories—with 32 films on hand from the U.S. and 24 in the foreign program.

27 year old writer/director Bo Burnham did stand-up comedy for 10 years before debuting at Sundance 2018 with his first film EIGHTH GRADE. At age 16, Burnham videotaped himself performing two comedic songs and posted them on Youtube to share with family. They got reposted to a site called Break.com and became an overnight sensation.

Tom Heffron and Destiny Gross share their recollections of the early days at the Sundance Film Festival, when it first came to Park City. They tell of many adventures, including their experiences of procuring festival tickets before the computer age changed everything.

Following a flurry of accusations against film industry mogul Harvey Weinstein, the Sundance Institute has issued a statement denouncing Weinstein for sexual assault, harassment, and other inappropriate conduct over the past decades. A couple of the allegations involve incidents at the Sundance Film Festival. Rick Brough has more.

A memorial will be held at the Kimball Art Center in early October for Irene Cho -- an independent film producer and an activist in the Park City film scene -- who died last month. Rick Brough has more.

Utah’s Office of Tourism and Film has 3.4 million dollars to allocate to local marketing efforts around the state.   Summit and Wasatch counties will receive some of these cooperative marketing funds. Carolyn Murray has more:

The Sundance Institute is proposing a new movie theater venue in Park City for the 2018 Film Festival. The old Sports Authority space in the Holiday Village Center would become a 500-seat theater. The plan is going to City Council for their reaction at tomorrow's meeting. Rick Brough has more.

Leslie Thatcher

Park City Mayor Jack Thomas and City Council announced today the city will purchase just over 5 acres in the Bonanza Park area for $19.5 million.  The site will be home to the Park City Arts and Culture District that will include new homes for the Kimball Art Center and Sundance Institute. Sundance Institute

After 17 years with Sundance Institute, wearing many hats from volunteer music cafe manager to Managing Director, Sarah Pearce will be resigning next month. 

According to a note from Sundance Institute director Keri Putnam, Sarah Pearce’s last day will be March 10th.  She has agreed to stay on as a consultant for the next several months as her position is replaced. Pearce says she’s leaving to pursue other interests.

Kimball Art Center

A new exhibit at the Kimball Art Center celebrates the independent spirit of Sundance.  Thirty-three artists represent the thirty-three years of the film festival.   And a popular writer, director and producer helped put the show together. KPCW's Renai Bodley explains:  

The Sundance Institute has unveiled its line-up of 66 films set for competition at the 2017 Sundance Festival. The films are set for the Dramatic and Documentary programs and the festival's Next section. Festival organizers also said a number of environmental films will be part of the New Climate program, inaugurated this year. Rick Brough has more.
