Deer Valley Resort’s 2019-2020 winter ski season may have been cut short in March due to COVID-19, but the resort is looking forward to continuing its summer operations as it’s set to reopen for business on Friday, June 26 with its usual lift-served mountain biking, hiking, and scenic chairlift rides available to guests.

Deer Valley Marketing Director Coleen Reardon says the resort is taking special measures to ensure guest and employee safety.

Summer is approaching and with it the question of what that means for tourism in Summit County.

The 2020 general session of the Utah Legislature ends in a few weeks. Park City Chamber/Bureau CEO Bill Malone’s number one priority is the tourism marketing performance fund, which is managed by the Utah Office of Tourism. It’s funded by sales tax revenue from tourism industries and is used for marketing, programming and the Utah Sports Commission. The legislature has appropriated $25 million for the fund this year, but Malone says there’s been a push to use a portion of that specifically for rural tourism development.

Room Rates Are Higher This Year While Occupancy Is Down

Occupancy and revenues for western resorts fell in December due to snow fall and school vacation schedules.  Lodging projections through the end of the ski season look soft and it likely won’t turn around without the white stuff falling from the sky.  Carolyn Murray has this:

Utah’s Office of Tourism and Film has 3.4 million dollars to allocate to local marketing efforts around the state.   Summit and Wasatch counties will receive some of these cooperative marketing funds. Carolyn Murray has more:

Park City Mayor Jack Thomas and City Council announced today the city will purchase just over 5 acres in the Bonanza Park area for $19.5 million.  The site will be home to the Park City Arts and Culture District that will include new homes for the Kimball Art Center and Sundance Institute. Ski Utah announces an all-time record in skier days, skier spending and ski tax revenues.  Across the board, it’s a banner year for Utah’s Ski Industry.  Carolyn Murray has more on this closing, year-end press conference.
