Avalanche In Backcountry Near Coalville Kills Snowmobiler

Summit County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Andrew Wright said they received an SOS notification at 1:20 pm Saturday. A party of three snowmobilers were riding in the East Fork of the Chalk Creek when one person triggered a slide that was reported to be 500 to 600 feet wide. The depth at the toe was four to seven feet. It buried one man and his snowmobile. The victim was buried 30 to 40 minutes before his companions were able to locate him and dig him out. He was unconscious and unresponsive. His companions performed CPR for forty minutes while waiting for the DPS rescue helicopter to arrive. The Department of Public Safety and Search and Rescue were able to use the SOS signal to identify the men's location. Air Med and Life Flight were not able to fly due to weather restrictions.  CPR was done in the helicopter while transporting the victim to an Evanston hospital. He was pronounced dead upon arrival. The male has been identified as  49-year old Jason Lyman from Mona, Utah.
