Midway city officials want resident input for how to improve its town square, and this week is the last chance to share ideas.
As part of a master planning process to improve the square with the Swiss Town Hall, ice rink and lawn areas, the city wants public comment of any kind, both from residents and visitors.
“Things have changed through the many years, and so has Town Square,” Midway Mayor Celeste Johnson said. We just felt like with public input we could find out what folks wanted to see done there. So, do we want to just enhance it a little bit, put in benches, trees pathways? Do we want to do something a bit more extensive? We don’t even know how extensive at all we even want to go with this.”
Years back, the city converted a parking area on Town Square into grass. Johnson says the idea for a broader renovation came about in discussion of potentially putting parking back there.
An online description of the nature of the project says it’s seeking comments on how to incorporate the square to Main Street. Also, it aims to keep the square mostly green and open.
Ideas already on the table are to add benches, restrooms and plant and water features.
The block is particularly important during celebrations that draw huge crowds to Midway, especially Swiss Days.
The comment period will last until the end of this week. Then, the city will work with architects to put together a plan over the winter and possibly start making changes later in 2022.
