Utah's GOP Governor Appoints Clear-Air Team

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gov. Gary Herbert is appointing 38 people to a Clean Air Action Team charged with taking a wide look at options to solve Utah's air pollution problem.

Officials say it goes beyond the job of Utah's Air Quality Board, which is adopting mandatory emissions cuts for everything from household products to industrial smokestacks.

Government action won't achieve federal air-quality standards until 2019 at the earliest. Herbert wants improvements sooner.

The Clean Air Action Team will use public education to encourage people to do things like leave behind cars for mass transit.

On the team are representatives from a wide range of interests, from industry and business to five doctors and even the American Association of Retired People. Herbert gave them until 2014 to complete their work.
