The NWS issued a winter storm warning for most of the state until Monday morning.
ABC4 Meteorologist Thomas Geboy said the storm will change throughout the weekend.
“It's not going to snow 100% of the time, but it's going to come in waves and could be heavy and then there during basically the brakes will have that time of blowing snow as the winds will continue to be quite strong.”
Geboy said temperatures could drop to temperatures below zero Fahrenheit with windchill, before rising on Sunday to just below freezing.
Summit and Wasatch counties have Code Blue protocols to help people without shelter when temperatures dip.
“The water content of the snow that we see on Sunday will likely be a little bit more dense and that could play with the totals a little bit. And it also could lead to more unstable snow. For anyone that had any plans to go to the backcountry, you probably just want to avoid it.”
Snow totals are expected to be well over 2 feet by Monday with most of the accumulation over the weekend.
“For our mountain valleys, including the Wasatch back, generally six to 12 [inches] between now and around five o'clock tomorrow morning, then maybe an additional 10 to 20 inches between Saturday and Sunday.”
Blowing and heavy snow will create dangerous winter driving conditions and could close roads.
Traction laws could also go into effect on mountain roads.
UDOT is warning residents to stay home during the storms. But if you must go out, leave plenty of time to reach your destination.
