The Summit County Sheriff’s Office has reported a second avalanche occurring at the same backcountry locale near the Canyons where a snowboarder died Sunday after triggering a slide. There were no fatalities or injuries from the slide on Tuesday afternoon.
The Sheriff’s Office reported that they got a report of a slide, at 1: 15 p.m. on Tuesday, in the Dutch Draw area. They determined that the slide was triggered by a skier using a snow kite.
On Sunday morning, a snowboarder in the same area set off a slide that buried him in about three feet of snow. The victim, identified as 45-year-old Raymond M. Tausczik of Salt Lake City, was uncovered by rescuers and taken to Park City Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
The press statement from Summit County asks that any recreationist immediately contact the sheriff, at 911, or 615—3601, if they trigger an avalanche in the backcountry. They advise it’s not a criminal violation to trigger a slide and no action will be taken against them. They ask witnesses to provide as much information as possible about the location, GPS coordinates, and other items.
