A four-day search in the High Uintas for a missing Idaho hiker ended tragically on Sunday. Search and Rescue crews found the body of 25-year-old Kyle S. Wimpenny, who evidently fell on King’s Peak.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office reported that Wimpenny left his home in Boise last Sunday, September 13th, with plans to summit Kings Peak—his second attempt on the mountain this year. His family said his goal was to climb the highest peak in each state.
When he did not return by Wednesday evening, his roommate notified Sheriff’s Dispatch. Deputies located Wimpenny’s vehicle at the Henry’s Fork trailhead shortly after midnight on Sept. 17th.
Personnel from Summit County and Duchesne County Search and Rescue, plus other state and federal agencies, have been searching the area, by foot, horseback and by air.
Wimpenny was found just before 2:30 Sunday afternoon on King’s Peak. It appears he fell approximately 1000 feet. His body was airlifted to Kamas and turned over to the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Sheriff’s statement said that “our hearts are broken” for Wimpenny’s family and friends.
